Créé en 1949 pour rétablir sans délai les liens coupés par la scission confédérale de 1947, avec les autres enseignants, le SNETAA adhère dès sa naissance à la FEN.
En 1967, le SNETAA devient la force majoritaire de l’enseignement professionnel en gagnant les élections professionnelles. Il a donc le plus grand nombre d’élus aux Commissions Administratives Paritaires Nationales et Académiques. Il a obtenu sa légitimité par ses mandats (objectifs) et par des luttes syndicales qu’il a initiées ou auxquelles il a participé. Le SNETAA est encore aujourd’hui le premier syndicat de l’enseignement professionnel.
En 1992, pour ne pas se soumettre au SE-FEN, syndicat général, le SNETAA quitte la FEN.
En 1993, le SNETAA et onze autres syndicats du monde de l’Éducation, se fédèrent dans la FSU qui prolonge la tradition de la FEN, en fonctionnant sur la base des tendances mais composée de syndicats nationaux. La singularité de la FSU réside dans la combinaison de la vie des tendances et de la souveraineté des syndicats nationaux.
En 2002, le SNETAA est exclu de la FSU et crée alors la fédération EIL.
En 2010, la loi sur la réforme de la représentativité syndicale (rénovation du dialogue social) étant votée par le Parlement, les organisations syndicales qui souhaitent continuer à exister, doivent envisager des «alliances». Après consultation des adhérents courant juin, le Conseil National du 14 octobre vote à l’unanimité l’affiliation graduelle du SNETAA à la FNEC-FP-FO.
Sur le plan des principes :
le SNETAA a toujours vigoureusement condamné toutes les lois ou dispositions, permettant l’exploitation des adolescents (loi juillet 71. loi Rover, …). Depuis la naissance du SNETAA, nous «combattons» pour que la formation professionnelle initiale soit exclusivement dispensée à plein temps dans les établissements d’enseignement technique public.
Le SNETAA est fondamentalement attaché à la laïcité.
Force de contestation, le SNETAA sait aussi être une force de proposition.
